MetaSweet® Prebiotic Fibers

IMO (Isomaltooligosaccharide) FOS (Fructooligosaccharides)

MetaSweet® has its two core products, MetaSweet® IMO (Isomaltooligosaccharides) and MetaSweet® FOS (Fructooligosaccharides), are falling under the broad definition of non-digestible oligosaccharides.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially influence the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, consequently improving host health. They feed the beneficial bacteria in our gut, helping them proliferate and providing us with a range of health benefits.

MetaSweet® IMO, also known as isomalto oligosaccharide, is a mixture of short-chain carbohydrates derived from tapioca starch or non-gmo corn starch. It’s often available in powder and syrup form, providing versatility for different food and beverage applications. In terms of benefits, IMO acts as a dietary fiber, providing satiety and aiding digestive health, but it also has a mildly sweet flavor that can partially replace sugars in formulations. It has less impact on blood glucose levels compared to regular sugars, making it suitable for lower-glycemic recipes.

MetaSweet® FOS, on the other hand, refers to Fructooligosaccharides, a type of fiber found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains. FOS syrup, in particular, has gained popularity as an inulin alternative and prebiotic syrup, offering a sweeter flavor profile and highly soluble nature. FOS can stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, a beneficial type of bacteria in the gut, promoting a healthier digestive system. Furthermore, FOS contributes fewer calories and provides a beneficial option for products designed for weight management.
